Our judges for this competition are:

Marc Jaffe

The following is an excerpt from Marc’s web site www.marcjaffe.com.  Some of the comments refer to the images on that site:

"After growing up in Southern Vermont, Marc has studied at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, as well as the Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston.  He has been a commercial photographer, graphic artist and web designer in recent years.

As a photographer Marc stretched the line between commercial Photography and Fine Art.  The work Marc handed the client was a combination of his love for the amazing quality of Painting with Light and his unconventional approach to product photography.

Marc’s Altered Reality series takes the viewer to completely new worlds.  As Marc likes to say ‘Altered Reality is an extension of the camera into the world of imagination.  Printed on canvas, the work is no longer a photograph, but a virtual world.’

His "Moving Trees" has been an ongoing project going back many years.  The process started with film and has progressed to Digital Photography.  The paintbrush effect is created in the camera through Marc’s special shooting technique.  The combination of stillness and movement is unique to each landscape and in un-retouched.  These images are taken while driving throughout Westchester County in New York and Fairfield County in Connecticut.

His "Horse Play" series is a natural evolution of his "Altered Reality" project, developing from his deep connection and relationship with animals.  Marc’s playful nature makes an instant connection with the horses, enabling him to photograph genuine reactions that are dynamic, vibrant and engaging."

Marc is a returning judge.

Paul Mindell

Paul has lived in Connecticut since 1984, and has works in private and corporate collections.  He received his BFA from the University of Michigan and his MAT from Rhode Island School of Design.  He is Associate Professor of Art at Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey, where he’s taught since 1998.

Paul works from his studio in Norwalk, CT.  A painter by training, Paul was inspired to work with photographs while traveling with his daughter a decade ago.  Shooting hundreds of pictures at a given scene, he cuts, crops, and rearranges them with a painterly technique that has become his personal signature.

"My photo collages reinvent the realities of my city and landscape location shoots.  Each is vibrantly alive with its own unique energy and mystery.  Whether seen up close or from a distance, each one draws you in.  I like how that creates a sense of wonder and intrigue."

See Paul’s website for his full Artist’s Statement (excerpted above) and for samples of his work in photo collage:  http://www.bergen.edu/facultyhome/mindell.asp

In addition to his photography, Paul has been painting oil portrait and figurative work for the last few years.  He has studied with several nationally recognized artists, and has been painting under Sharon Sprung at the Art Students League, NY, since summer of 2007.

This will be Paul’s second time as one of our judges.

Rick Prokop

Rick is currently a member of the Scarsdale Art Association, the Art Society of Old Greenwich, and is a former member of the Mamaroneck Artist’s Guild.  He studied portrait photography with Didier Dorort and is currently studying B&W printing with Joel Cipes.

Rick received a B.F.A. degree from SUNY Purchase in Piano Performance in 1975.  Since 1981, he has been a faculty member at The Music Conservatory of Westchester in White Plains, NY where he teaches jazz/classical piano.  He is also the author of "Piano Power, A Breakthrough Approach to Improving Your Technique.

Rick has received numerable awards on shows in Westchester and Fairfield counties.  See his website at http://prokopgallery.com

Please welcome Rick as this will be his first time as one of our judges.

See you in October

Competition Night, Wednesday, September 17 @7:30pm

The first competition night of the season is here, Wednesday, September 17, starting at 7:30 pm.

The assigned subject for September is Water.

Print submission is accepted up till 7:15pm.  We will start promptly at 7:30pm.

Our judges for tonight are:

CAROL DIXON – Carol has a BA from Vassar College, a masters from Columbia University, and has additional art training at the Pratt Institute and Brooklyn Museum.  She recently retired as chair of the Greenwich Academy history department where she taught courses in Asian and African civilizations, advanced placement art history, economics, architecture, and studio art.  Her works have won prizes locally and nationally, and are in many corporate and private collections.

She now teaches a course in Collage/Mixed Media for the Greenwich Arts Society Studio School.  She has previously been on the art faculty of the Stamford Museum.

JOHN DIXON — A graduate of MIT in architecture, John has had a long career in architectural journalism — serving for 24 years as chief editor of Progressive Architecture magazine, with offices in Stamford.  Judgement about photography has been crucial in his work.  While most of his own thousands of photos document architecture, he has taken prizes for his photos in the Old Greenwich sidewalk show and in the Art Society of Old Greenwich shows at the Greenwich Library.  He and Carol have lived in Old Greenwich for 35 years.

DAVID KALMAN — For 30 years, David has pursued his passion for creative landscape photography.  David’s photography dramatically captures the timeless aspects of the world around us.  The beauty of a single flower, a Venice canal, Lake Louise, or the lush greenery of Connecticut are but a few examples of David’s expansive portfolio.

Throughout the years, David has consistently experimented with different formats as a way to achieve brilliant clarity and exacting detail in his photography.  Starting with an inexpensive single lens reflex camera, David graduated to medium format in 1989, then to a 4 x 5 format, and recently to cutting edge 11 megapixel digital format.  The clarity of color and exactness of detail in his photography rivals images produced by large format 4 x 5 landscape cameras.

"Shooting photography requires absolute concentration," David states.  "I find that I am completely absorbed in the process, and as remote as possible from the stress and demands of my business life.  When I am behind the camera, my attention is totally focused on the image, the exposure and the details of the scene."

David has participated in numerous photography workshops worldwide and has exhibited throughout Fairfield County.

David lives in Westport with his family.

This bio is an extract of a more detailed one on David’s website at http://www.photographybydkalman.com.

See you tonight at the competition.
