On Wednesday, we celebrate the end of another successful competition season with our annual Photograph of the Year Competition.
Members may submit 2 photographs into each category: Black & White Print, Color Print and Digital Projected Image.
The images you submit into this competition must have been shown during the 2008-2009 competition season. No new images are permitted. Your two selected images in each category may come from either the open subject or assigned subject categories (there is no separation in this contest), and are not to be altered or changed in any way from the way they were originally submitted.
There will be a Class A and a Class Salon division for each category (B&W Print, Color Print, Digital Projected Image).
While the two levels will compete separately in all three categories for First Place awards and several Honorable Mentions, the "Print of the Year" or "Digital Image of the Year" will pit the first place image in Class A vs. the first place image in Class Salon, the judges selection between the two will be crowned the Photograph of the Year for the 2008-2009 season and will be displayed on the front page of the website.
If there is a tie for first place in either class, there will be a second judging to determine a sole first place image in each class.
Entries into the digital projection category must be sent to the image collector (DHFore@hotmail.com) no later than 3:00 p.m. Monday, May 1.
We are pleased to announce our All-Star panel of judges for our Photo of the Year competition this coming Wednesday. Please let them know how much you appreciate their joining us for the evening:
BILL HOWE
Bill Howe is a Darien-based photographer and wood sculptor whose works have been exhibited locally and won awards at the New Canaan Art Society, Greenwich Art Society and Old Greenwich Art Society. His works are also represented at the Ridgefield Artisans Guild.
Working out of the Woodworkers Club in Norwalk, he also designs and builds custom furniture for private collectors in Greenwich, Darien and Ridgefield, CT, as well as Portland, ME and New York City. He earned his MFA at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1979 where he studied photography and film. He has works in 35mm, medium and large format film as well as digital image making.
His photographic influences include Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, Jack Dykinga, David Muench, and Alison Shaw.
"I was given my first Argus camera when I was 11 years old," said Howe, "and I have been doing it ever since." Forty years later, his craft and art have diverged–and converged. "At first, I thought of the camera as a way to record exactly what something looked like — a moment, an event, a person. I wanted to make the image and the moment coincide." Since then, his photography has evolved into finding the pictures and stories embedded in the often-overlooked details of life.
